Public Funding in Croatia for Video Games

  • Croatian Audiovisual Centre

The Croatian Audiovisual Centre is the Government-backed strategic agency for the audiovisual sector in Croatia. It aims to stimulate a successful and vibrant audiovisual industry, as well as to promote the widest possible enjoyment and understanding of audiovisual works throughout Croatia.

Since 2021, the Centre has been providing public funding for the development and production of video games. The video games sector is an integral part of the ecosystem of our country’s cultural and creative industry.

  • Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia

For over five years, within its public calls, the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia has been co-financing Croatian independent video game producers.

On the initiative of the Ministry of Culture and Media, a law change was introduced adding video games as a segment of audiovisual activities in 2018, which created a legal framework for encouraging and co-financing video games of cultural, artistic and educational significance.

  • City of Rijeka

An amendment was adopted by Rijeka (2023), making it the first Croatian city to incorporate video games into its open call for public support, in addition to other audiovisual works.

  • City of Novska & Primorsko-Goranska County

For many years, Croatian game developers have received financial help from the City of Novska and Primorsko-Goranska County through the first gaming incubator in Croatia, Business Incubator PISMO.
